Over the last several months the hacker group known as “Anonymous” has come to the surface of the media after attacking the websites of Paypal, Amazon, and Mastercard, in January.  These attacks were an attempt to discourage the companies from preventing Wikileaks from receiving donations from the public.  The attack sparked a public outcry on both sides, some referred to the group as cyber activists while others referred to them as cyber terrorists.  The distinction has been a difficult one to make; however, Anonymous is not a group that is easily defined through motives or actions.

Indeed, the group known as Anonymous is comprised of thousands of people from all over the world.  There is no hierarchy or formal leadership scheme of any kind, and any actions the group takes are proposed beforehand and then acted out based on a consensus among the group.  This sort of extremely informal decision-making process has made the group very hard to stop.  Without any leader the group does find itself carrying out operations in many different directions; this has resulted in actions being conducted by members without consensus.  Operations carried out by so-called “rogue members” are openly condemned within the Anonymous community.

The recent campaign against Sony; however, has been conducted with group consensus, and as a result Sony’s websites have been going offline sporadically.  That is not all, there have also been massive outages for Sony’s Playstation Network (PSN), and while Anonymous has not claimed responsibility Sony has said that:

“Our support teams are investigating the cause of the problem, including the possibility of targeted behavior by an outside party.”

If this group is hampering multi-billion dollar corporations then there is certain to be consequences for the USD and other majors on the online forex exchange. Corporations of the world seem to be at the mercy of this group, and without a serious upgrade in security they will likely continue to be.
